“A couple of years ago on a Friday
I was leaving the office and visiting with a friend about nothing
of importance when out of nowhere and unprocessed she blurted out,
“Ron, have you ever thought what you want to be when you grow
up?” The question stunned me and obviously served well as a
conversation ender. But, it made me think. I have taught on the Jr.
High, High School, College and University levels; I have worked for
corporate America, Mutual/United of Omaha; I have tended sheep (Yes,
I mean that. My father was a sheep herder); I have sold real estate;
I have worked as a private consultant; I have farmed: I have constructed
upscale housing; and, I have developed property. And, now, in my mid-sixties
a “good” friend is asking me what I want to be when I
grow up.
She obviously knew me better than I knew myself and apparently
sensed the dissatisfaction I had been experiencing in the various
“positions” that I had held since knowing her. And her
question brought it to a conscious level for me. Yes, I was unhappy
with my professional endeavors: long hours, low pay, no recognition,
working for somebody else, you name it. There were discouraging
downsides to everything I had tried.
Enter Agel. Need I say more? Helping people help themselves
and earning ridiculous rewards while having fun and doing it only
when you feel like it isn’t exactly the definition of “a
job”. Yes, Terri, I know what I want to be when I grow up:
I want to be an AGEL team member, maybe even into retirement."
